Abstract
The article presents a brief analysis of Ukrainian scientific publications and reference sources to compare the position of scientists on the definition of basic terms and concepts needed to achieve the goal of designing a web-oriented encyclopedia in the field of education and psychology. In particular, the meaning of the "term" and "definition" as well as the historical preconditions for the use of the terms "dictionary" and "encyclopedia" are considered. The differences between such reference editions as "alphabetical dictionary", "thematic dictionary", "encyclopedic dictionary" "encyclopedic dictionary-reference book", "encyclopedic reference book", "biographical reference book", "encyclopedia", "national encyclopedia", "subject encyclopedia" is determined. The rapid development of digital technologies in the late XX – early XXI century became the impetus for the emergence of reference publications in electronic format and the emergence of electronic encyclopedias. During the analysis, it was established that "web encyclopedia" and "online encyclopedia" are interpreted to be identical concepts. It is advisable to single out "wiki encyclopedias" as their subspecies. The term "electronic encyclopedia" is often used synonymously with them in the scientific literature, but its content includes not only encyclopedic publications available on the Internet but also digital analogs of paper-printed encyclopedias. The article presents the author's understanding of the relationship between all these terms. It is determined that online encyclopedias are an integral part of the digitalization of society, which reflects the processes, explain natural and social phenomena and events, capture historical milestones, in a concise form clarifies information about a country or a particular field of knowledge, and is important and a powerful basis for preserving the cultural heritage of a nation. This type of encyclopedic publication has gained wide popularity among the public due to its multimedia properties and free and uninterrupted access 24/7.
