Abstract
The article generalizes the teachers’ imagination about practical tasks, which provide an opportunity to assess the students’ ability of to use knowledge in biology in practical activities. Taking into account the purpose of the research, for the analysis of tasks two parameters were used: the formulation of the problem and the situational significance of the condition. The analysis revealed four groups of tasks. The ability to use knowledge in practical situations is one of the types of substantive biological competence and differs from narrow-oriented skills precisely as it manifests itself in solving new tasks that have not previously been practiced at lessons. This ability becomes of particular importance in the context of the participation of our schoolchildren in the International Study of Education Quality PISA in this year.
