Abstract
The article examines the theoretical and practical aspects of developing cartographic competence of students with intellectual disabilities within the context of contemporary educational transformations and martial law in Ukraine. The relevance of the issue is substantiated in light of the increasing importance of spatial orientation, cartographic skills, and digital literacy for the social adaptation and safe everyday functioning of children belonging to this category. The study analyzes Ukrainian and international research addressing the potential of digital technologies, interactive maps, and GIS services in teaching geography to both typically developing students and learners with special educational needs. The educational possibilities of the online service Google My Maps are described with regard to the step-by-step development of cartographic competence in students with intellectual disabilities through the use of markers, color-coded layers, icons, routes, and the integration of photographs and textual materials. It is emphasized that the use of Google My Maps interactive maps enhances voluntary attention and memory, develops spatial thinking, and stimulates students’ cognitive activity and interest in geography lessons. The paper provides examples of applying Google My Maps functionality in the process of working with interactive maps within the topic “Ukraine on the Map of the World” in the school geography curriculum for special general secondary education institutions. In particular, the examples relate to introducing students to the geographical location of Ukraine, its borders, the capital city, and the region where the students live. The stages of organizing work with interactive maps in geography lessons are identified: introduction; acquisition of knowledge and formation of practical skills; consolidation and assessment of learning outcomes. Special attention is paid to the importance of considering the cognitive capabilities of students with intellectual disabilities, differentiating tasks, and providing pedagogical support when necessary. The results of surveys conducted among teachers and students demonstrate the positive impact of the systematic use of Google My Maps on the development of cartographic competence in students with intellectual disabilities.
