Abstract

The author highlights the relevance of conducting a semantic analysis of the concept of “web-oriented digital collection of an educational library” and its terminological field as a complex categorical construct of definitions that emerges at the intersection of library science, web technologies, information analytics, digital humanities, and digital education. The purpose of this study is to address the issue of semantic analysis of the concept of a “web-oriented digital collection of an educational library” and to present the interim results of the theoretical and analytical phase of the research project “Cultural Foundations for the Use of Web-Oriented Digital Collections in Educational Libraries” (2026–2028, 0126U001416), which is being conducted by the Department of Digital Technologies and Computer Support at the V. Sukhomlynskyi State Scientific and Educational Library of Ukraine. The methodological framework of the study consists of a set of approaches, including the following: semantic, structural-logical, systemic, contextual, terminological, transdisciplinary, and others. It has been established that web-oriented design characterizes both the access channel and the principles governing user interaction with the collection, its navigation, search functionality, semantic connectivity, and integration into the open information space. The need to clarify the meaning of this concept has been substantiated in light of the transformation of traditional library resources into a unified system of an open information knowledge base. It has been established that a web-based digital collection is not merely a collection of digitized documents, but involves the purposeful selection, structuring, description, identification, preservation, presentation, and provision of access to interrelated digital objects. Accordingly, the information-resource, technological, metadata, semantic, communication, user, and institutional concepts of the studied concept have been identified. An original definition of the concept “web-oriented digital collection of an educational library” is proposed. Future research is expected to include the development of a semantic model for a web-based digital collection of an educational library, the definition of its ontological structure, metadata system, and criteria for semantic completeness and interoperability, as well as the formulation of a methodology for evaluating its informational and analytical quality. This article represents an interim result of the theoretical-analytical phase of applied scientific research; that is, it is theoretical in nature.
