Abstract

This article summarises the progress and interim results of the theoretical and modelling phase of the project ‘Artificial Intelligence for Research in Education: Forecasting, Modelling Integration and Digital Research Competences’, which is being carried out with grant support from the National Research Foundation of Ukraine. The aim of the article is to summarise the interim results of the project and to highlight how a systematic review of thematic publications and research practices concerning the use and reporting of artificial intelligence (AI) has laid the foundations for constructing a theoretical and systematic model of its use in educational research. The study is based on a critical analysis and synthesis of project documentation and published works, a comparative analysis of models for using AI in research, and a synthesis of the results obtained. Through this analysis, the authors found that, despite the rapid growth in the global body of publications, the proportion of Ukrainian works in the analysed Scopus and Web of Science samples does not yet exceed one per cent. The authors classified existing practices of AI use in educational research — which reflect varying degrees of delegation of cognitive operations — into five functional clusters. A methodological audit of 220 works revealed a generally low level of completeness and transparency in reporting on the application of AI. Based on this analysis, a theoretical model was developed that combines nine components and two independent dimensions of integration, as well as a systemic model comprising eight functional components and twenty ideal-type configurations according to the degree of delegation and the level of organisation of research activity. It has been argued that the unit of analysis should not be an individual digital service, but rather the holistic practice of using AI tools; as the degree of delegation increases, the requirements for verification, validation, disclosure of information and human accountability increase non-linearly. These interim results serve as a basis for further empirical testing of the models, for forecasting the topics and outcomes of research involving AI, and for defining the content of digital research competences.
