Abstract
The article addresses the pressing issue of designing a renewed framework for literary education within the basic subject cycle of the New Ukrainian School. Particular attention is devoted to the necessity of developing contemporary curricular and methodological support for the school course in Ukrainian literature in alignment with the requirements of the new State Standard of Basic Secondary Education. The study emphasizes the potential of the current model curriculum in Ukrainian literature for grades 7–9, elaborated by the research team of the Institute of Pedagogy of the National Academy of Educational Sciences of Ukraine, in terms of its correlation with the conceptual foundations of the State Standard. The paper further outlines innovations and pedagogical approaches to teaching Ukrainian literature in grade 8, with a focus on the chronological-stylistic principle. The article presents the model of the existing Ukrainian literature textbook for grade 8 students of general secondary education institutions. Its content and structure are grounded in the implementation of chronological-stylistic, reader-centered, and text-centered principles of presenting literary texts and instructional material, while taking into account the age-specific characteristics of eighth-graders’ artistic perception, as well as their personal and reading experience. The study delineates the features of the stepwise organization of students’ reading activities in accordance with the chronological-stylistic principle of engaging with literary works. It explicates the content of textbook sections, whose didactic function lies in deepening students’ knowledge of specific cultural and artistic epochs and literary movements. The methodological apparatus accompanying the instructional topics is analyzed in terms of its role in implementing the chronological-stylistic principle. The article concludes that the study of Ukrainian literary works within this framework contributes to the formation of students’ holistic understanding of the national literary process in the context of cultural and artistic epochs, the development of analytical skills for interpreting literary texts with regard to the aesthetics of literary movements and their historical, sociocultural, and artistic contexts, the acquisition of literary-theoretical concepts concerning the essential features of artistic movements, and the cultivation of reading competence and general cultural literacy.
