Abstract

This article presents the results of an empirical study on the typical life problems and tasks portrayed in contemporary cinematographic discourse and their relevance to the experiences of Ukrainian youth amid social uncertainty and wartime conditions. The study explores the sociocultural potential of cinema as a cultural text capable of shaping an individual’s life competence. A qualitative content analysis was conducted based on participants’ responses regarding films that, in their opinion, represent major life challenges, the associated tasks, and strategies for their resolution. Seven thematic clusters of life problems were identified: the search for self-identity and self-realization; coping with personal and social challenges; development of interpersonal relationships; ethical and moral dilemmas; professional growth and career aspirations; overcoming past traumas; and the pursuit of adventures and discoveries. Based on the analysis of films mentioned by respondents, the study outlines characteristic life tasks and mechanisms for their construction and resolution, which serve as valuable resources for developing life competence. It is demonstrated that each strategy for addressing life challenges within cinematic discourse reflects distinct dimensions of personal development and helps youth to comprehend potential difficulties, assimilate, and integrate psychological resources necessary for problem-solving in a rapidly changing world. The findings support the view that cinematic narratives not only reflect the realities of sociocultural existence but also contribute to fostering self-reflection, self-knowledge, moral consciousness, and adaptive capacity in Ukrainian youth. During wartime, cinema also fulfills educational and therapeutic functions by enhancing reflection, critical thinking, and cognitive flexibility. The results have practical significance for applying cinematic discourse in designing youth mental health support programs under conditions of uncertainty. Future research should focus on individual configurations of life task construction in cinematic narratives, their influence on decision-making, and their role in identity development among contemporary Ukrainian youth.
