Abstract
The article deals with the study of the assessment process as an integral part of the educational process. It focuses on the distinction between the concepts of “assessment” and “evaluation,” emphasizing that assessment is not limited to assigning grades, but is a multifaceted process aimed at supporting learning, student development, and improving teaching. The author analyzes the historical aspects of the development of assessment systems in Ukraine and abroad, in particular, the practices of Finland, France, Germany, the United States, and other countries. The purpose of the work is to conduct a comprehensive study of the concepts of “assessment” and “evaluation,” their significance in the educational process, and current trends in the assessment of student academic achievement. Particular attention is paid to the “New Ukrainian School” reform, which focuses assessment not only on testing № 1318 knowledge, but also on determining the level of development of students' key and subject competencies. The functions of assessment are revealed – testing, educational, diagnostic, corrective, motivational, educational, developmental, and prognostic, which together ensure the effectiveness of the educational process. The criteria for assessment approved by the new regulatory documents of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, as well as modern requirements for objectivity, transparency, and ethics in pedagogical assessment, are considered. The author analyzes traditional (oral, written, test, practical) and innovative (project activity, portfolio, case method, self- and peer assessment, gamification) assessment methods and identifies their advantages and disadvantages. Considerable attention is paid to digital assessment tools, including Mentimeter, Padlet, Quizizz, Socrative, Plickers, etc., which promote interactivity and personalization of the educational process. The paper thus aims to explore the idea that effective assessment is not only a means of control but, above all, a means of learning and development. Its main goal is to create a supportive educational environment where students are motivated to learn, receive constant feedback, and teachers have the opportunity to adjust and improve their teaching practices.
