Abstract
The article is devoted to solving the problem of teaching people with intellectual disabilities (hereinafter referred to as IDD) health self-advocacy skills (outside of institutional support) to ensure their rights in the field of health care and to defend their own interests in medical care. Based on the foreign studies analysis, the state of people’s with IDD access to medical services is determined, the problems causes in providing them with medical support are described, the effectiveness of educational training programs on health self-advocacy skills and increasing the independence level in obtaining medical care is characterized. The forming skills approach to take care of one's health in high school students with PIR is highlighted within the framework of considering the health self-advocacy concept as setting and implementing specific goals and plans by young people in various areas of their health, as well as taking into account other factors (increasing the knowledge level of teachers and parents, their awareness of the need to teach children health-saving skills, their willingness to teach, encourage and exercise constant control over children's regular work on developing and maintaining healthy habits, as well as motivation from peers).
