Abstract
Ukraine’s European integration course requires consistent harmonization of national legislation with the norms and standards of the European Union. In the context of our study, this means the implementation of European principles on human rights, inclusion and language policy. The European approach emphasizes the need to recognize and support sign languages as part of the linguistic diversity of the EU, as well as the transition from a medical model of perception of deafness to a socio-cultural one, where Deaf people are carriers of a unique culture and native sign language. Thus, European integration ecomes a catalyst for reforming Ukrainian policy and practice towards sign-speaking citizens.
