Abstract
The practical manual describes the theoretical basis, strategies, methodological and practical recommendations for teaching the integrated course "Health, Safety and Well-being" for students with intellectual disabilities in grades 5-10. The main focus is on highlighting problematic issues of maintaining physical health in students of this category (insufficient physical activity, obesity or overweight, menstrual behavioral and emotional problems). Based on the experience of Western countries, possible ways to strengthen physical health to improve the life quality of students with intellectual disabilities are discussed, namely: developing health self-advocacy skills and improving communication with medical professionals, types of support to monitor children's work on developing habits beneficial to their health, means of combating overweight, traditional and innovative methods of increasing students' physical activity, methods of regulating menstruation and hormonal dysregulation, and developing menstrual hygiene skills in adolescent girls. For the convenience of organizing the educational process, the manual provides an approximate calendar-thematic planning of lessons (according to the model program of O. Myakushko and O. Kozhanovska), examples of lessons, practice-oriented tasks and useful links are given. In order to encourage students to work on improving their physical health and physical activity, the appendix provides options for “goal-setting worksheets” and examples of active games (in particular, a block of exciting games with a colored parachute). The manual is addressed to specialists in special and inclusive general secondary education institutions for persons with special educational needs; to scientists, teachers and students of higher education institutions; to parents of young people with intellectual disabilities.
