Abstract

The article analyzes the peculiarities of resilience among Ukrainians under state of war. Resilience is viewed as an individual’s ability to adapt to stressful life situations, overcome difficulties, and recover from adverse events. Each challenging life circumstance provides a person with the opportunity to discover hidden internal resources and capabilities previously unknown to them, thus reinforcing the importance of taking action and strengthening one’s inner support. The qualities and characteristics of a resilient personality are outlined. Purpose is to analyze the specifics of resilience among Ukrainians living both within the country and abroad during the war. It was determined that resilience is associated with optimism and a positive outlook on life, which is manifested in the belief in one’s own ability to overcome challenges, effective self-regulation under stress, better emotional management, avoidance of negative coping strategies, and quicker restoration of emotional stability. The research was conducted in the summer of 2023. A total of 422 individuals residing both in Ukraine and abroad participated in the study. An online survey was conducted using a Google Form. The study found that Ukrainians living in Ukraine demonstrate a slightly higher level of resilience compared to those living abroad. The quality of life of Ukrainians living abroad does not significantly differ from that of those who remain in Ukraine. A statistically significant difference was found in the level of activity, with Ukrainians residing in Ukraine demonstrating higher levels of activity than those living abroad. Ukrainians who were forced to leave the country due to the war likely face additional stressors such as adaptation to a new environment, acculturation, and integration into a new society, all of which may affect their level of resilience. It was revealed that indicators such as optimism, autonomy, personal growth, positive relationships, sense of purpose, and self-perception do not show statistically significant differences between the groups.
