Abstract
The article updates the problem of studying contemporary literature that corresponds to the age characteristics of students in grades 5-7 and the formation of comprehensive skills of a competent reader on its material. The article analyzes current educational documents and scientific research by Ukrainian and foreign scientists. It notes the insufficient attention of scientists and teachers of literature to the possibilities of contemporary literature for young readers in developing their transversal skills. The attention is focused on the concepts of W. Iser and I. Franko, which describe the skills of a competent reader. The importance of referring to these theories in the modern conditions of modeling the system of formation of key competencies in the process of school study of works of art, newly introduced for textual analysis. The effectiveness of using ideas about aspects of interaction between the author and the reader through tasks based on the text of a work of fiction to establish a connection between literature and other academic disciplines and to develop students' key competencies is proven. The article describes an effective system of questions and tasks for a separate group of transversal skills of pupils in grades 5-7 aimed at developing their reading competence as a subject and key. It is noted that the introduction of a system of tasks for the development of transversal skills of a qualified student-reader became necessary after a survey of teachers of secondary education institutions and the identification of the main problems. It was found that teachers often do not have sufficient qualifications to effectively form the key competencies of an “implicit reader” in students in grades 5-7. It is summarized that this is due to insufficient experience in using modern teaching methods and a lack of quality teaching and learning materials. The directions of involvement of the research materials in the process of teaching language and literature are outlined.
