Abstract
The educational reform currently underway in general secondary education institutions in Ukraine envisages that lower secondary school graduates will make an informed choice regarding their individual educational trajectory. This highlights the need to examine the potential of school textbooks as instruments for fostering students’ career orientation. The aim of the study is to analyse the authors’ Grade 7 biology textbook as a means of fostering career orientation among students within the framework of STEM education implementation. The study employed several research methods: content analysis (to identify career-oriented components within the textbook structure), structural-functional analysis (to reveal the relationship between educational topics and potential professional orientations), comparative analysis (to contrast the textbook with those of the previous generation), and elements of typological classification (to categorise tasks based on their level of practical orientation and profession-related content). Results. It was found that the Grade 7 biology textbook deliberately integrates STEM components into the educational process through project-based learning, research-oriented tasks, and the use of infographics, tables, diagrams, and charts. Particular attention is given to data analysis tasks designed in the PISA format, which contribute to the development of students’ research skills, critical thinking, and orientation towards contemporary professional roles in biology, medicine, biotechnology, and ecology. Conclusions. A comparison with previous-generation textbooks demonstrates a clear shift from reproductive knowledge acquisition to an activity-based and career-oriented approach. The analyzed textbook incorporates tasks that simulate professional situations, supporting the development of students’ research competencies and critical thinking. At the same time, there remains a need to further improve educational materials to ensure the systematic integration of students’ career orientation within the STEM framework.
