Abstract
The article highlights the factors that determine the importance and feasibility of media education in elementary school. The issue of media literacy among younger students is addressed as a new outcome of primary education, as reflected in the State Standard of Primary Education. An analysis of research in the field of Ukrainian textbook development for elementary school is conducted. A range of scientific studies and publications on the theory and practice of media education and the formation of media literacy in the younger generation is analyzed. The purpose of media education for younger students is clarified, which involves developing practical skills to perceive, analyze, interpret, critically evaluate the content of media texts, create their own media products, and assess their own media activity. Typical educational programs in the linguistic and literary field are analyzed in the context of requirements for developing these skills in students of primary grades. It is noted that one of the means contributing to the formation of media skills is the textbook. Attention is drawn to the necessity of modernizing literature-based reading textbooks for elementary school and enriching their content with media texts. The experience of implementing tasks related to the content lines "Exploring Media" for the first cycle of primary education and "Exploring and Interacting with Media Products" for the second cycle in author's literature-based reading textbooks is disclosed. Examples of using media texts in these textbooks are provided. It is emphasized that the success of forming the basics of media literacy in younger students can be achieved by maintaining a balance between perceiving, analyzing, interpreting someone else's media text and creating their own media product. Examples of tasks encouraging younger students to create their own media texts are given. It is proven that the use of media texts in textbooks is an effective means that will contribute to the development of practical skills for critical and safe consumption of information products among students in primary grades. The conclusions of the research are drawn, and prospects for further research are outlined.
