Abstract

This article presents the results of theoretical and pilot research on trust in oneself and the factors influencing its development among internally displaced persons during the war. The phenomenon of trust in oneself is examined, highlighting its role in the ability to withstand the existential challenges caused by Russian military aggression and the forced displacement of Ukrainians to safer areas. Trust in oneself is understood as a personal quality and resource that ensures physical and psychological survival and the full functioning of a person. The article presents the results of a pilot study on the level of trust in oneself among modern Ukrainians before and after relocation to safer territories during the war. It has been found that trust in oneself is influenced by the following factors: the age of the respondents; the analysis and acceptance of one’s personal experiences, which are perceived and evaluated as either positive or negative; responsibility for one’s decisions and personal choices; trusting relationships with others; and trust in those who were directly involved in resolving the difficult situation. The research empirically demonstrates the interrelationship between trust in oneself and personal responsibility. The research is based on self-assessment of levels of self-trust, trust in others, and personal responsibility. The results of the analysis of respondents’ comments on the impact of acquired personal experiences and the level of trust in oneself and trust in others are discussed. The analysis shows that trust in oneself depends on trust in others and is reinforced by it; the levels of trust in oneself and trust in others jointly affect how Ukrainians perceive their forced displacement experience due to Russian military aggression, whether positively or negatively. The importance of reinterpreting and utilizing one’s experiences in strengthening and developing trust in oneself as a personal resource is emphasized. The article suggests that future research should focus on planning and conducting an experiment to verify, refine, and deepen the data described in the article, as well as developing psychological support technologies for internally displaced Ukrainians to preserve and strengthen their trust in oneself.
