Abstract

The article highlights the experience of media education development in the United States of America. The prerequisites for introducing media literacy in educational institutions of the United States of America are identified. The approaches of leading researchers to the interpretation and study of media literacy are analyzed. It was noted that by the mid-90s of the twentieth century, 12 states of the United States had included in their educational standards sections on media education and media literacy (California, New York, Minneapolis, New Mexico, Texas, North Carolina, Wisconsin, Minnesota, etc.). By the year 2000, almost all states included media education to the curricula of their schools and higher educational institutions, and the Union of Media Literacy of America was founded. There are six main principles of media education, developed by the National Association of Media Education.
