Abstract
The problem of the role of media literacy in the system of educational standards of the United States of America is considered. It is determined that media education is related at the same time to the knowledge of how media texts are created and disseminated, as well as to the development of analytical abilities for interpreting and evaluating their content; whereas the study of media is usually associated with the practical work of creating media texts. Both media education and media studies are aimed at achieving media literacy goals. The national standards are analyzed, which states that students should be able to evaluate, express and defend their position on the influence of the media on the political life of America, explain the importance and importance of free speech, evaluate the role of television, radio, press, information databases and new communication tools in American politics, compare and contrast different forms of political beliefs, and consider the extent to which traditional forms have been replaced by electronic media, explain how congress, president, state and local government officials use the media to communicate with the public. The main problems of introduction of media literacy in the system of educational standards of the United States of America are identified: appeal to standards of media literacy, lack of resources slows down the processes aimed at teaching media literacy, the need for state evaluation of media literacy. It has been pointed out that media literacy topics are most often encountered in the process of studying English, in the philological and communication industries are often accompanied by social studies, social activities, as well as in the fields of health and nutrition. Attention is paid to the importance of assessing students’ media literacy. As an example, the experience of testing students for their media literacy in the states of Texas and California is cited.
