Abstract

The article deals with the problem of forming students’ environmental competence in the study of biology and ecology in high school. The purpose of the article is to substantiate the methodological foundations for the formation of environmental competence in high school students of general secondary education institutions. The article notes that in analyzing this problem, it is advisable to use a model of the system of forming students’ environmental competence. In the process of preparing the article, the generally accepted research methods (analysis, synthesis, systematization, classification, comparison and generalization) were used to determine the degree of development of the problem and to analyze the curriculum for high school of general second- ary education institutions “Biology and Ecology. Grade 10–11. Standard level” and “Biology and Ecology. Grade 10–11. Profile level”. The existence of a contradiction between the available natural resources and the needs of mankind in terms of ensuring their comfortable existence is recognized. It is determined that the structural components of the environmental competence of students include the availability of environmental knowledge, environmental skills and personal volitional qualities. It is emphasized that the school curriculum of the profile level provides for the “attitude” component among the expected learning outcomes. The article indicates the conceptual foundations for the formation of students’ environmental competence in the study of biology and ecology in high school – regulatory and legislative, economic, social, moral and personal. It is determined that the list of documents available for managing the activities of general secondary education institutions of Ukraine is sufficient to realize the possibility of forming environmental competence in the educational process. It is indicated that the moral and personal principles of the system of forming students’ environmental competence are realized through the use of an activity-based approach in the educational process. Opportunities to use this approach are laid down in the practical work provided at the profile level, the indicative list of which is diverse and relevant. The completion of the target block of the system of forming the environmental competence of students can be considered systemic, problematic, situational, axiological and cultural approaches and principles used by the teacher in his or her activities.
