Abstract
The problem of defining the principles of teaching literature in the New Ukrainian School has been updated. The tasks of the textbooks of Ukrainian literature, prepared at the Institute of Pedagogy of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, were analyzed. It has been proven that in the process of studying Ukrainian literature, an integrated course of literature (Ukrainian and foreign) in the 7th grade, students will get acquainted with the genres of epic and lyrical works, develop the skills of genre analysis, and in the process of analytical and synthetic work with the texts of artistic works, learn to distinguish between their genre varieties. All this contributes to the development of students' genre thinking as a prerequisite for the stylistic analysis of literary works in grades 8-9.
