Abstract
The article updates the problem of designing the content of modern school literary education, focuses on scientific research on updating the content of literary education in the projection of modern educational priorities, outlines the criteria and principles of its development on the basic subject cycle of general secondary education in the context of the requirements of the State Standard of Basic Secondary Education; the content component of Ukrainian literature as an educational subject for 7th grade and 8–9th grade is presented, and the main criteria for the selection of works of art for textual and extracurricular study by the appropriate age categories of students-readers are defined; the peculiarities of the consistent implementation of the modern content of school literary education in the textbook of Ukrainian literature for the 7th grade of the New Ukrainian School, the concept of which is based on the principles of person-oriented, competence-based, activity-oriented, cultural approaches, reader-centric and text-centric principles, the content of the structural sections of the textbook, the didactic purpose are briefly described which effectively ensures the development of subject reading and key competences of schoolchildren.
