Abstract
The article is devoted to the problem of forming one of the eleven key competencies defined in the State Standard of Basic Secondary Education. The purpose of the article is to substantiate the methodological foundations for the formation of students' environmental competence while studying the biology course in the 6th grade of general secondary education. The article notes that in solving this problem it is advisable to rely on the model of the system of forming students' environmental competence. To make the article, the generally accepted research methods (analysis, synthesis, systematization, classification, comparison, and generalization) were used to determine the degree of development of the problem and to analyze the curriculum for general education institutions "Biology 6-9 grades". It has been determined that the main efforts of biology teachers in terms of achieving a certain level of environmental competence of 6th-grade students are aimed at orienting children to realize the importance of sustainable development, readiness to participate in solving environmental problems, and social development. The article identifies the possibilities of the educational content of each topic for the formation of this competence. It is emphasized that a biology teacher needs to convert the various components of the expected learning outcomes into the formation of a personal attitude of students toward a certain group of organisms and awareness of their role in ecosystems. The final result of environmental competence formation is not the sum of knowledge and skills, but changes in the personality, consciousness, attitude to nature, the ability to carry out rational environmental activities in the future, to take an active civic position regarding the violation of ecological balance, the ability to convey one's position to other people, etc. In other words, environmental competence is a certain characteristic of a person's psychological and emotional properties, which are realized in some activities, first in studying and then in protecting nature. In fact, the acquisition of certain biological knowledge is only one of the means of shaping the future characteristics of a person in society. The article determines that the formation of environmental competence is a process that is closely related to the formation of psycho-emotional traits of a person at a young age and does not stop with the end of education.
