Abstract
Based on the understanding of the connection between the concepts of "historical memory" and "national identity", which acquire extremely important importance in the conditions of information warfare, the opinion is argued that it is necessary to enrich the history of Ukraine, in particular the history of education, with unique historical figures who personify the Ukrainian spirit, temperament, character, best personal traits. In accordance with this fundamental position, the role of academician Mykola Dmytrovych Yarmachenko (1928-2010), a famous scientist and educator of a galaxy of Ukrainian scientists-pedagogues in the development of Ukrainian education, has been updated and highlighted. The peculiarities of his creative path from an inquisitive village boy from the dead end of Polissia to an academician, founder-organizer of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of independent Ukraine, its first president (1992) are described.
