Abstract
The author updates the problem of book reading, which is raised at the state level. The timeliness of the problem of reading books corresponds to daily activities, in particular informational, cognitive, professional activities of each person and the design and implementation of his life plans. It has been proven that this problem is especially acute for Ukrainian society, that arises against the background of the global trend of the fading of the culture of thoughtful reading and the unsatisfactory level of reading literacy. Literacy is defined in the European Framework of Key Competences for Lifelong Learning and in the Law of Ukraine «On Education» as one of the universal skills of a person. The role of reading in stimulating the brain and the development and preservation of memory has been clarified. Reading contributes to the prevention of Alzheimer’s disease, increases stress resistance. It is emphasized that a person’s resistance to stress is very important in the conditions of the Russian-Ukrainian war and in increasing the probability of achieving the set goals, as well as in the development of systemic critical thinking and the acquisition of key skills for mastering the future profession. The author analyzed the state of reading, relying on modern sociological research. The reasons for the decline in Ukrainians’ interest in reading have also been clarified. Cause-and-effect relationships have been established between the lack of ability to read and intellectual and cultural gaps, between the reduction of imagination and the impoverishment of the spectrum of emotions, between the inability to learn, analyze, carry out other mental operations, model and the inability to generate new knowledge, ideas, critically, creatively and innovatively to think and act. The state Strategy for the development of reading for the period until 2032 («Reading as a life strategy») was analyzed, which defines the purpose, goals and tasks of the state in this matter, as well as the expected results. The Strategy identifies and specifies the tasks of the educational sector in relation to its implementation. The solution to the problem is seen in the development at the level of programs and the implementation in the textbook of the content of mastering reading as a type of speech activity, the determination of the necessary skills and results in the context of the adaptation of texts for reading to the main criteria and requirements of the digital age. Prospects for further research are determined.
