Abstract
This article is dedicated to one of the central issues of modern education: the formation of a competent student-reader in the realities of the New Ukrainian School. The question of updating the content of literary education in schools and preparing innovative curricular and educational support for 5th – 6th grade literature courses is addressed, taking into account the requirements of the New State Standard of Basic Secondary Education. We present a concept of the textbook for an integrated course in literature (both Ukrainian and foreign) for the 5th grade of the New Ukrainian School (authors – T. O. Yatsenko, V. I. Pakharenko, I. A. Trygub, O. A. Slizhuk), prepared at the Institute of Pedagogy of the National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences. Our concept is grounded in the application of reader- and text-centric principles to the process of working through literary texts and educational material. We elaborate on the didactic and methodological potential of the content and structure of the textbook for the formation of key competencies in student-readers. We present excerpts of specific educational material to demonstrate the organization of productive reading practices among adolescent students, focused on the consistent formation of key competencies in the textual study of Ukrainian and foreign writers. In particular, we place an emphasis on thematic sections of the textbook and a system of reproductive, research-based, and creative questions that methodically and effectively contribute to the formation of the following student competencies: fluency in the state language; the ability to communicate in their native and foreign languages; mathematical competencies; competence in the field of natural sciences, engineering and technology, innovation, and environmental sciences; information and communication competencies; “lifelong learning”; civic, social, and cultural competency; entrepreneurship and financial literacy.
