Abstract

The article highlights the problem of prevention of penitentiary staff’s emotional burnout. The increased risk of stressful situations and traumatic impact on such professionals causes the danger of emotional burnout and further professional deformations. The factors causing destructive states of people working in the penitentiary system can be divided into individual and organizational. The individual factors include socio-demographic characteristics and personal traits; the organizational ones do performed activities and working conditions. The performed empirical study found out that the causes of emotional burnout could be divided into two main groups: features of professional work (87% of the respondents) and the risk of getting into extreme situations (62% of the respondents). The penitentiary employees were not aware of the seriousness of their experiences. Considering negative emotional states as an integral part of their activities, these professionals ignored the initial signs of emotional burnout and did not seek psychological help. However, an individual is often unable to get out of a stressful situation on their own. The main reason for this is ignorance of effective means of stress overcoming. Without skills of effective getting out of a stressful situation and adjustment of their emotional states, people commonly try to solve this problem with alcohol, which often leads to alcohol addiction. We have formulated a new approach to prevention of emotional burnout, in which simple and accessible techniques presented in the article played the leading role.
