Abstract
The article describes the transformation of the traditional concept of «literacy». The transformation is due to the rapid development of modern technology and the total digitalization of society. Differentiation of various types of activities takes place and there is a significant difference in the interaction of the digital generation with the online environment. There is a growing need for the use of modern storage media and the latest information and communication technologies. The methods of transmitting information are becoming diverse, because the requirements for current students are increasing. The author focuses on the relevance of the formation of pupils' ability to freely switch from one sign system to another, to recognize, evaluate, interpret and transcode information structures, if necessary. The author interprets the concept of «literacy» in a modern way, defining the novelty, which lies in the heterogeneity of the educational information space. Active stay and activity in the educational information space requires universal basic personality traits, other criteria for evaluating these qualities, as well as multiple multimodal multifaceted and multidimensional literacy. The article describes the range of problems in the field of new literacy; in particular, it concerns disagreements between offline and online formats and reading contexts, a combination of relevant options, mastering specific reading strategies, and the like. In the article, the author specifies the expansion of categories related to new literacy. A certain group of categories included concepts that were combined under the new umbrella of literacy: information, media literacy, media competence, media education, (audio) visual literacy, computer literacy, information literacy, information and communication literacy and the like. In the article, the author considers all the components of the new literacy; designs ways to increase pupils’ literacy compares aspects of Ukrainian and foreign terminological systems; raises the question of adaptation and the context of borrowing for the Ukrainian terminological system; characterizes research and the introduction of new literacy in the educational process of the New Ukrainian School.
