Abstract
The author raises the issue of applying the competency approach in the process professional development and development of teachers of institutions of professional higher education. Professional development of teachers should be transferred from the accumulation of regulations certain knowledge, skills and abilities in the plane of formation and development of ability to act practically and to apply creatively the acquired knowledge and the gained experience at various situations. Characteristic features of professional development of teachers by using a competency approach is to increase the role of the subject in social transformations, its ability to understand the dynamics of development processes.
