Abstract
The article discusses the psychological factors of professional work that can lead to professional burnout. The performed theoretical analysis of emotional burnout in professional work is presented. The essence of the "emotional burnout" concept is revealed, the practical recommendations concerning prevention and overcoming of emotional burnout in professional work are highlighted. The article emphasizes that emotional burnout is an acquired stereotype of emotional, most often professional, behaviour that allows a person to dosage and economically spend his/her energy resources. The emphasis is made also on dysfunctional consequences, when emotional burnout negatively affects professional performance and relationships with other people. Manifestations of emotional burnout are: the desire to create an emotional distance in relations with others and, thus, to avoid exhaustion; development of a negative attitude to own professional achievements. The conclusion is made that burnout is not a one-time process, but it is developed gradually, as a process. It begins without warnings until a particular moment, it proceeds slowly, latently, and then, suddenly and unexpectedly, a person experiences a feeling of exhaustion. At the same time, he/she cannot associate this devastating experience with a particular concrete stressful event.
