Abstract

Today media literacy counts as a necessary key skill for modern society. As new technologies and media are used more and more throughout social life, people need to develop more than just their ICT skills; they need a broad digital awareness of the wider context in which technologies and media operate to wrap around these skills in order that they can participate in this increasingly digital world. Media literacy is characterized by the concept of «media competence» and is combined with all kinds of specific media related activities. Media operate in specific cultural and institutional contexts that determining how and why they are used. Most public policy discussion of new media have centered on technologies – tools and their affordances. The problem of the definition of media competence is considered in this article. Also the interpretation of the concepts «competence» and «competence» for the different views of scientists is carried out. The transition to the concept of «media competence» is being implemented. The analysis of scientific literature allowed to reveal that nowadays the development of media competence of the university graduates is an important factor of their success in future professional activity. It is also mentioned that the development of media competence is closely connected with the development of the main professional competences of specialists. It is proved that a graduate of an institution of higher education must use traditional and modern information technologies He also must competently understand the information, critically think and have a point of view. Media competence is defined as a set of knowledge, skills, abilities, facilitating the using, critical analysis, evaluation, creation and transmission of media texts
