Abstract
The author examines the problem of the functionality of knowledge and skills in the Ukrainian language, the functional literacy of students, finds out the state of the problem and offers one way to solve it. Given the new challenges of modern education, there was an urgent need to unload the programs through the prism of functionality, viability, and compliance with public inquiries. According to the author, one of the principles of adjusting the content component of the program in the Ukrainian language for a general secondary school should be the consideration of the public functions of the language.
