Abstract
The main characteristics offunding for researchand development in thehigher education institutionsof the US were investigated, usingthe country’sofficial statistics.It was found thatthe correspondingexpendituresfor the periodof 2004 - 2013increasedin 1.5 timesand reached67.2 billiondollars, orabout 15%of the nationalexpendituresfor these purposes.Mostuniversityresearch and developmentare fundedfrom the federalbudget (59%), funds ofinstitutions (22%), and the least are supportedbusiness (5%).Thebasic researchreceives64% of finding, applied research - 27%, and development - 9% of the total funding.Two thirdsof expenditures(67%)are directed toresearch and developmentin public institutions, one third (33%)- privateones.Spending onuniversityresearch and developmentare carried outin 24fields(includingthreeunidentifiable).More than56% of the funds are allocatedto the "Life sciences".Besidesthis field,other priorities are:"Physicalsciences", "Environmental sciences", "Electrical engineering", "Social sciences","Computersciences","Mechanicalengineering", "Civil engineering", "Education", "Psychology".Togetherfor these10fields, 86% of total expenditures are allocated.The principles andpriorities, approaches to fundingresearch and developmentin the universities of the United Statescan be used fordevelopment of a strategyfor scientific andtechnological activitiesin the sphere ofhigher education in Ukraine.
