Abstract

The article presents the results of a theoretical-empirical study of the peculiarities of the assessment of military and political events as the effects of the interaction of community identities. The concept of «community identity» is defined as the result of a person’s identification with certain communities, based on their unique characteristics, cultural and/or ethnic ties, history, social relations, common goals that define specific communities, a collective sense of belonging, shared values and interests. Local identity is conceptualized as a type of community identity, which manifests itself in a general feeling of involvement in life and events that take place in the territory of immediate residence. Civic identity is defined as a special type of community identity, which is identification with the community of citizens of a nation-state entity, and involves the commonality of rights, privileges, and responsibilities in relation to a certain state and a sense of belonging to it, and also becomes an essential factor of civic activity. The results of an empirical study, in which 717 civilians participated (450 women and 267 men) who are in Ukraine and do not have the status of internally displaced persons and refugees. The author’s questionnaire «Determining the characteristics of the interaction of community identities, attitudes towards internally displaced persons and refugees, reforms of local self-government and decentralization of power in Ukraine, integration of migrants into the local community» was applied. The questionnaire includes questions on the measurement of types of identities, which were developed by scientists of the mass and community psychology laboratory of the Institute of Social and Political Psychology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The experience of war intensifies the interaction of identities. It was revealed that the assessment of military and political events as traumatic is the effect of the interaction of high levels of local and civic identities. No significant clearly expressed correlations of feeling like a victim of circumstances with local and civic identities were found. A significant negative correlation between European and East Slavic identities was revealed. War reinforces conflicting identities.
