Abstract

The article outlines the value of M. Sumtsov's scientific heritage in the development of awareness of socio-cultural identity, cultural identity, preservation of national heritage, and historical roots. The role of Mykola Sumtsov in the process of formation of the Ukrainian socio-cultural identity of the beginning of the 20th century is analyzed. The theoretical and methodological understanding of Mykola Sumtsov's scientific heritage regarding Ukrainian cultural identity as an important factor in the development of the nation and the state in terms of socioanthropological ideas of the Ukrainian philosophy of education (1917-1991) is highlighted. Attention is focused on the process of formation of the Ukrainian sociocultural identity as an important factor in the development of the nation and the state. It was determined that the socio-anthropological approach allows analyzing the phenomenon of cultural identity, its elationship with ethnic identity, to single out the factors and mechanisms of its formation. Anthropology provides an opportunity to fully investigate the state, problems and prospects of the formation of national and ethnic identity in Ukraine, the national character of the people's culture in the conditions of profound social transformations. It has been established that M. Sumtsov was a devoted Ukrainian patriot who, on the basis of huge factual material, made scientific generalizations about Slobid Ukraine as a purely Ukrainian region with Ukrainian rites, traditions, and beliefs inherent in its population. It was revealed that it was M. Sumtsov who paid a lot of attention to the creation of his own scientific method of ethnographic research. The scientist carefully studied the theories, methods and directions available in science at that time: pointing out the positive and negative, in his opinion, aspects of mythological, migration, anthropological and other schools, and also highlighted rational points in each of them, trying to combine them. It has been proven that today the surname of M. Sumtsov is studied in Ukrainian science not only in the context of the development of ethnological, museological, literary, regional, etc. science, but also in the ethno political history of Ukraine in general. The role of M. Sumtsov as one of the most prominent figures of the movement for the national and cultural revival of the Ukrainian people has been confirmed. The statement of the scientist has passed a century and still remains relevant.
