Abstract

In the conditions of the liberation war waged by the Ukrainian people, information of historical character is perceived in a new way and the connection between education and modern life is comprehended. This fully applies to natural science history, which students learn about in natural science courses. The article discusses the informational support of basic knowledge in chemistry, which provides an understanding of the historical role of domestic chemical science and technology. Examples are given from the history of the development of chemical crafts and industrial production in the territory of present-day Ukraine, extraction and transportation of Ukrainian natural gas, development of Ukrainian chemical terminology and nomenclature, formation of electronic concepts in chemistry, and contributions of domestic scientists to the development of synthetic organic chemistry, etc. A competency-based approach involves directing the content of chemical education towards solving problems that are vital for every person, and providing students with experience in the functioning of scientific knowledge in real-life situations. The article provides specific examples of the use of scientific chemical knowledge in modern war realities, where it is a matter of preserving the health or even the life of a person. An algorithm for competent behavior in a dangerous situation related to the action of aggressive chemical compounds is proposed, which is based on understanding the causes and sources of danger, awareness of the importance of preventive and rescue measures, and requires adherence to certain rules. The methodology for working with these issues in chemistry classes is also presented.
