Abstract

Strategy to bring Ukrainian system of education to competence-oriented standards prompts educators to reconsider traditional methodological approaches to teaching foreign languages in order to provide its communicative nature and shape the ability to communicate with representatives of other cultures. In educational practice monologue speech has long had a reputation of activity with low communicative output. Mostly it involved mechanical memorizing of topics or text fragments and reproducing them to a teacher. Hence, approaches to shaping students’ skills in monologue speech require to be thoroughly reconsidered from perspectives of competence approach. The objective of the research is to prove that monologues have a communicative nature, thus they are addressed to another person. Besides, the author outlines the main types of monologues and provides the teacher with tools to shape relevant skills in students. The research was aimed at students of Grade 5-6. This category was chosen as students start their education at secondary school and skills in all types of communicative activity are to be shaped according to the standards of secondary school. The main methods of research involved providing teachers with relevant methodological recommendations, observation of educational process and students’ progress, analyzing teachers’ feedback. The research proved that students can profoundly improve their skills in monologue speech provided they follow teacher’s instructions in structuring their utterances according to its type (description, report, reflection), using relevant patterns. Evidence proved that using visual prompts has a favorable effect on students’ skills to reproduce their monologues.
