Abstract

The section reveals the outstanding figure of Ivan Alekseevich Sikorsky, who at one time was one of the founders of child psychology and special pedagogy in the Russian Empire, as well as an outstanding scientist in the field of psychiatry, an innovator and organizer of medical and psychological assistance to children with special needs, a founder on the Ukrainian territory ( m. Kiev) of numerous scientific societies - the Psychiatric Society, the South-Western Society of Temperance, the Society for the Protection of Persons in Prisons and Street Children, the Society of Nestor the Chronicler, the Frebelev Pedagogical Society, the Physico-Medical Society, whose activities are aimed at disseminating among the general population of scientific ideas about a healthy lifestyle, about appropriate approaches to the upbringing and development of children. It is revealed that in the history of pedagogy I. Sikorsky remained as one of the first domestic scientists who substantiated the psychological foundations of preschool pedagogy; his pioneering contribution to the development of ideas about the upbringing of children with psychophysical developmental abnormalities was extremely significant. It is proved that in 1904, together with his daughters, I. Sikorsky opened the first specialized private institution in the Ukrainian lands for mentally underdeveloped and nervous children, where they not only dealt with them, but also taught them, studied their characteristics, and consulted parents on the problems of raising such children. The Medical Pedagogical Institute for mentally underdeveloped, retarded and nervous children, founded by A. and A. Sikorsky in Kiev, is the crown of the implementation of I. Sikorsky's scientific ideas about the upbringing of special children.
