Abstract

The article outlines didactic and methodical aspects of organizing the process of teaching foreign languages to elementary school students with a competence-based approach. It describes the principles of selecting didactic material in order to provide competence-oriented content, explains how age peculiarities of elementary school students and their cognitive capabilities influence their aptitude to master the content of foreign language learning (which is determined by the curriculum). In accordance with the considered scientific principles, a model of competence-based teaching of a foreign language to students of grades 1-4 is suggested by the authors.
