Abstract

The article grounds the hypothesis about the relationship of the national character, as socio-psychological characteristics of large groups of people, with the collective traumas that these groups have experienced. Preconditions and features of the Ukrainian national character in connection with collective traumas, in particular – with trauma of the Holodomor are examined. Possible prerequisites of aggressiveness in characteristics of group psychology of individual nations are explored. Typology of coping with collective traumas, enshrined in national character, is offered. From the standpoint of present concept analyzed following events 2013–14: "The revolution of dignity," shooting "Heavenly Hundred" and the war in the Donbas. The conclusions about need for social and psychological work to overcome the negative effects associated with prerequisites and consequences of both historical and contemporary collective traumas.
