Abstract

Methodological approaches and techniques, periods and trends of comparative research in the field of adult education are defined and proved in the article. It is found that comparative studies in the field of adult education developed in the context of comparative pedagogy, which has gone from ordinary interest to scientific analysis and proceeded in three dimensions: from chaotic to a specific data collection; from philanthropy in international pedagogical cooperation to professionalism; from intuitive analysis to scientific explanation. According to periodization of comparative studies in the field of adult education, they include a subjective implicit period (XIX century) based on the implicit comparison (description of a foreign education system without its comparison with national); an objective-descriptive period (first half of the XX century) characterized by comparative studies which were mostly of historical or philosophical nature, provided description, identification and comparison of historical and cultural landmarks of adult education (national matrices); an analytical period (second half of XX - beginning of XXI century), which distinguishes scientific proof and the use of complex methods for processing and analysis of materials. It is determined that by 1966 descriptive methods and borrowings prevailed in comparative studies of adult education, and after that - the problem method which made it possible to conduct not only basic research aided at establishing theoretical principles of adult education, but also applications that allow to adapt international experience. The areas of comparative research in the field of adult education are determined, such ns foreign comparative educational research, which includes description and analysis of adult education system that differs from national ones; international comparative educational research which consider European or global system of ndult education, exploring the possibility of establishing and developing links between adult education systems in different countries through the study of educational policy, the impact of the economy and other factors; comparative educational research in the narrow sense when two distinct systems of adult education are analyzed according to the established criteria of comparison. It is proved that comparative studies in the field of adult education present promising direction of comparative and pedagogical studies.
