Abstract
The paper is dedicated to the philosophical investigation of the Weltanschauung principles and values behind the concept of Open Science. It is argued that Open Science is a complex phenomenon not limited to the procedures of open access procedures, as open access to publications is only a means of publicizing the results of scientific investigation. The Open Science is stated to be grounded on the classical ideal of the Enlightenment and on the Mertonian principles of the ethos of science. It is concluded that the full implementation of the ideas of Open Science requires a whole range of transdisciplinary human competencies, and especially general cognitive and communicative skills, aimed, among other things, at the popularization of science and its re-institutionalization in society.
