Abstract
The article presents the results of an empirical study of the psychological factors of hardiness in primary school children under martial law. The theoretical framework of the study is based on S. Maddi’s concept of hardiness and the assumption that self-esteem, locus of control, and family support interact as major factors of a child’s adaptive potential. The study was conducted during the 2024–2025 academic year among 111 pupils aged 7 to 10 years from grades 1–4 of a private lyceum in Kyiv. The psychological factors of hardiness were assessed using the “Ladder” method developed by V. Shchur, an author-developed picture-based interview method by N. Prorok and O. Chekstere, and the Kinetic Family Drawing by R. Burns and S. Kaufman. The findings indicate that the hardiness of primary school children is associated with self-esteem, locus of control, and the characteristics of family relationships. Age-related differences in hardiness levels were identified: in the first grade, 11% of children demonstrated a high level, 83% a medium level, and 6% a low level; in the second grade, the corresponding figures were 6%, 88%, and 6%; in grades 3–4, 10%, 90%, and 0%, respectively. The findings indicate an uneven but generally positive strengthening of children’s adaptive potential as they gain educational experience and develop coping mechanisms for stressful situations. The necessity of systematic psychological support for primary school children is substantiated, particularly during the second year of schooling, when adaptive resources appear to be under the greatest strain.
