Abstract

The author’s approach is proposed to characterize the main areas of development of children with intellectual difficulties of various degrees of manifestation in the form of limitations in the functioning of the intellect itself: cognitive, speech, psycho-emotional, physical, educational, everyday and social. The cognitive and speech spheres, as the most important in the psycho-speech development of children, are presented in more detail. The cognitive sphere of children of the specified category is characterized by indicating the state of formation of perception, attention, imagination, memory, thinking. The speech sphere is described by the following indicators: general manifestations; understanding of speech; lexical structure; grammatical, phonetic-phonemic, prosodic components; coherent speech; communicative component. The presented clear, structured characteristics of various areas of development of children with intellectual disabilities will be useful to correctional educators, speech therapists, practical psychologists, teachers, and students of higher educational institutions of pedagogical orientation.
