Abstract

This article develops a six-stage historical-pedagogical model of the development of design and technology education in Ukraine. It addresses a gap in international design education research by showing how national trajectories of craft, artistic-industrial training, avant-garde experimentation, technical aesthetics, ethnodesign, and digital innovation can be interpreted as interconnected educational logics rather than as isolated historical episodes. The study is a conceptual historical-pedagogical inquiry based on historical analysis, cultural analysis, systems interpretation, and comparative educational reasoning. The model identifies six stages: traditional craft education; artistic-industrial education; avant-garde, constructivist, and modernist education; technical-aesthetic and industrial design education; ethnodesign and national-cultural renewal; and digital-innovative, STEAM-oriented design and technology education. Each stage contributes a distinct pedagogical layer: craft-symbolic form-making, material and production literacy, experimental visual communication, functional and ergonomic thinking, culturally responsive design, and digital modelling and prototyping. The article argues that contemporary design and technology education is strengthened when digital transformation is connected with cultural memory, material knowledge, project culture, and responsible innovation. The proposed model offers a comparative framework for researchers and curriculum developers seeking to integrate cultural heritage, technological capability, and future-oriented design learning across diverse national contexts.
