Abstract

The article addresses the issue of improving teachers’ speech culture as an essential pedagogical condition for effective teaching of the Ukrainian language in grades 7–9. Particular emphasis is placed on the significance of the teacher’s word, through which the educator simultaneously teaches, educates, and shapes a competent language user, as well as students’ worldview and civic stance. The word acquires special importance in the professional activity of a teacher of Ukrainian language and literature, for whom speech functions as a multifaceted tool of professional realization. The influence of adolescents’ cognitive and creative characteristics on the selection of linguistic means by the teacher is determined. In particular, the transition to abstract thinking and the ability to analyze cause-and-effect relationships create a need for teacher talk that goes beyond the mere transmission of information. The functions of teacher speech are characterized, including motivational, communicative, informational, organizational, and educational. It is substantiated that, in the context of contemporary societal challenges, teacher speech can be considered an instrument of psychological interaction. It is emphasized that the modern teacher is expected not only to demonstrate effective communication, be persuasive, and influence an audience or an individual listener, but also to teach these skills to students, as the ability to express, justify, and defend one’s opinion is essential for every active citizen. The study outlines ways to improve pedagogical speech, including continuous self-education, professional development, reflection on one’s own speech activity, and the use of modern digital tools.
