Abstract
The article substantiates the leading role of syntax in shaping a competent language user and in developing students’ logical thinking and linguocreativity. It актуalizes the problem of designing and implementing the content of teaching Ukrainian syntax in general secondary education institutions on the basis of a competency-based approach and in accordance with the requirements of the updated State Standard of Basic Secondary Education. The functional and communicative potential of syntax as a branch of linguistic science is outlined; the principles for selecting syntactic constructions for Grades 8–9 are defined, as well as the range of syntactic skills that students should master. The expediency of using problem-based, inquiry-based, research-oriented, and information-focused exercises is substantiated. The possibilities for developing students’ logical thinking and linguocreativity in the process of working with texts of different genres and styles are revealed. The implementation of competency-oriented learning is analyzed using the Ukrainian language textbook for Grade 8 (authors N. Holub, O. Goroshkina) as an example; samples of research, creative, and other types of exercises are presented. The advantages of the competency-based approach to Ukrainian language lessons are justified, along with the importance of systematic work with texts of various styles and genres, during which students analyze the functionality of syntactic means and the appropriateness of their use. Emphasis is placed on tasks aimed not at checking the level of acquisition of theoretical knowledge, but at applying syntactic knowledge in practical speech situations, which corresponds to the requirements of modern language education. Among the methodological principles, special attention is paid to orientation toward learning outcomes defined by the State Standard of Basic Secondary Education. It is concluded that effective teaching of syntax should be based on the integration of knowledge-based and activity-based components, orientation toward the practical use of syntactic means in real communicative situations, and the use of creative and research tasks.
