Abstract
The paper considers potential impact of some personality traits on the dynamics of spiritual experiences and prosocial behaviour. It is noted that spirituality is one of the purely human manifestations of being. It is indicated that healthy spiritual experiences are often associated with an increase in person’s optimism and hope, as well as with various prosocial behaviour, although in modern scientific discourse the problem of the correlation between these psychological phenomena remains insufficiently studied. The author investigates situations when aggression, performed by representatives of religious groups, may be treated as permissible within a specific society in the context of the interpretation of their faith sources and the level of personal optimism. It is also concluded that spiritual experiences are the result of normal processes in the human psyche and nervous system, although pathological processes can have a certain impact on the peculiarities of their origin and course. It is indicated that healthy spiritual experiences contribute to person’s psychological well-being, increase optimism, reduce the level of anxiety and depression, enables one to find new meanings in life, etc. In spiritual experiences caused by pathological processes in the psyche a person, in an emotional sense, may experience fear, anxiety or anger, various panic attacks, depressive states, as well as aggression directed at representatives of various social groups. It is noted that spiritual experiences caused by pathological processes represent a certain regression of the personality. It is assumed that some personality disorders and related personality traits can significantly pathologize spiritual aspirations and experiences, sometimes making it impossible for a person to have any spiritual growth. The potential influence of specific personality disorders and related personality traits on the peculiarities of spiritual experiences and prosocial behaviour of a person is considered.
