Abstract

The article outlines the vectors of transformation of the educational function of the modern literacy textbook in the context of implementing the New Ukrainian School concept and presents the experience of embodying educational potential in an authorial educational publication. The modern textbook is considered as a multifunctional space in which literacy acquisition becomes a foundation for the first grader’s socialization, self-identification, and value-based self-determination. It is substantiated that the contemporary educational model involves a shift from the reproductive assimilation of moral norms toward fostering reflection, empathy, and the learner’s active agency in the process of educational and cognitive activity. Particular attention is paid to presenting the educational potential of the authorial literacy textbook developed on the principles of child-centeredness. The article highlights the practical aspects of implementing the educational capacities of this publication, in which the content and methodological framework are integrated with cross-cutting educational strands. The authorial approach to content selection and the system of tasks is revealed as one that, while ensuring effective reading instruction, simultaneously encourages the child to engage in dialogue and to resolve life situations close to his or her real experience. Special emphasis is placed on patriotic education, which in the authorial textbook acquires the features of a “living identity” and is implemented through an appeal to the child’s relevant life experience, representations of contemporary heroes, the promotion of Ukrainian traditions and achievements, and the involvement of pupils in active interpersonal communication. The role of visual materials and media texts is also revealed as a means of the explicit representation of value orientations and the ethical foundations of behaviour. Based on the experience of the practical approbation of the authorial textbook, it has been demonstrated that the systematic integration of the content-related and procedural components of the authorial edition contributes to the comprehensive development of the younger schoolchild’s personality, the formation of an active civic position, and the establishment of ethical foundations of behavior on the basis of the activity-based approach. It is concluded that the modern textbook is an effective tool for the comprehensive development of the younger schoolchild’s personality in unity with his or her intellectual growth.
