Abstract

The digital transformation of research practices necessitates the development of researchers’ digital competence in research data management in accordance with the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable). The purpose of this study is to assess the current level of awareness among researchers and academic staff regarding the FAIR data concept and open science practices, and to identify typical gaps in the use of open research repositories. The study was con ducted in 2025 within a professional development online training course focused on digital competence enhancement. Data were collected through a structured online questionnaire administered via Google Forms and analyzed using descriptive statistical methods. The findings indicate an insufficient level of competence in FAIR data management. Specifically, 39.78% of respondents encountered the FAIR principles for the first time during the course, 47.31% demonstrated fragmented awareness, while only 12.91% possessed substantial knowledge and practical experience in applying FAIR principles. Regarding repository use, 46.24% reported no experience with international research repositories (such as DOAJ, CORE, and arXiv), and only 6.45% used them systematically. Institutional repositories were used more frequently (12.90% systematic use), yet the overall integration of open research infrastructures into academic practice remains limited. The results reveal a significant gap between global open science trends and their practical implementation in the Ukrainian educational research context. The study substantiates the need for targeted educational programs aimed at developing FAIR data management competencies to enhance transparency, reproducibility, and international collaboration in educational research.
