Abstract
The article is devoted to substantiating the prospects and ethical challenges of using generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) for the development of information and digital competence (IDC) of lower secondary school students in the context of the digital transformation of the education system. The relevance of the study is обусловлена the rapid spread of GenAI tools, which are increasingly integrated into the educational environment and are transforming approaches to organizing the educational process, student–teacher interaction, and the creation and processing of learning content. The aim of the study is to substantiate the prospects and ethical challenges of using GenAI for the development of students’ information and digital competence at the lower secondary education level, based on an analysis of the current state, educational practices, and strategic trends in the development of digital education. The methodological framework of the study includes methods of theoretical analysis, synthesis, generalization, and comparison of findings from contemporary international and domestic scholarly publications, regulatory documents, international reports, and educational initiatives in the field of artificial intelligence and digital education. Particular attention is paid to the analysis of studies that reveal the pedagogical, organizational, and ethical aspects of integrating GenAI into the educational process, as well as the potential of these technologies for personalizing learning, supporting students’ independent work, and developing their digital literacy. As a result of the study, key areas of GenAI application in school education are identified, and its potential for fostering critical thinking, information literacy, and skills of analysis, evaluation, and creation of digital content is substantiated. The main risks and limitations of GenAI implementation are also identified, including ethical challenges, issues of academic integrity, uneven educational practices, and the insufficient preparedness of teachers to use such technologies. It is concluded that the effective use of GenAI in lower secondary education requires a systematic, methodologically grounded, and ethically balanced approach aimed at developing students’ ability to critically and responsibly interact with digital technologies.
